The airspace over Catalonia, Valencia, part of Murcia and Aragon, and a large part of the Spanish Mediterranean.
Description of the Air Navigation Regional Directorate
The Eastern Air Navigation Regional Directorate provides air traffic control and information services for transits flying over the Barcelona FIR/UIR, covering approximately 300,000 Km2, consisting of the eastern Iberian peninsula and part of the Mediterranean Sea,including the Balearic Islands. It also provides services for three large terminal control areas: the Barcelona TMA (in the Barcelona Control Centre), the Levante TMA (in the Valencia TACC), and the Palma de Mallorca TMA (managed by the Air Navigation Regional Directorate for the Balearic Islands). Our collateral centres are, to the West, Madrid and Seville; to the South, Algiers; to the East, Marseilles; and to the North, Marseilles and Bordeaux.
The Air Navigation Regional Directorate is based at Barcelona Control Centre. The centre began operations in 1960, first at the facilities at El Prat de Llobregat, and since February 2005, in its new premises in the municipality of Gavà.
This region provides ATS, CNS and AIS services at Girona-Costa Brava, Barcelona-El Prat and Reus Airports. It also provides CNS and AIS services at Sabadell and Valencia Airports and the civil-military airports of Murcia-San Javier and Albacete.
The regional directorate's main asset is its large team of nearly 1,000 people from a range of disciplines. One of the characteristics of the Eastern Regional Directorate is that the increasing demand from non-seasonal traffic taking off and landing at Barcelona-El Prat Airport, the second busiest in the Aena network, coincides with heavy seasonal demand at the airports for some of the most popular holiday destinations in Europe, such as the Balearic Islands, Costa Brava and the beaches of the Levante region. This means the Eastern Regional Directorate has high strategic value, but must also bear the responsibility of facilitating one of the major assets of the Spanish economy: the tourism industry.
