Awards recognise scientific research, technological innovation and outreach work on matters related to air navigation
18 October 2017
Minister for Public Works Íñigo de la Serna today presented the awards of the 22nd edition of the event run by the ENAIRE Foundation (the cultural institution associated with ENAIRE, the air navigation manager in Spain).
The awards correspond to three categories: Journalism Award, José Ramón López Villares Award and Luis Azcárraga Award.
Journalism Award
This award recognises journalistic works related to transport and air navigation. It was given to Cristina de la Rica for her career as a Europa Press journalist and her dedication to tracking aeronautical sector information.
Luis Azcárraga Award
This award is aimed at works, studies or projects that have made a singular contribution to air transport. On this occasion it was awarded to two studies:
• “A multi-start randomized heuristics for real-life crew rostering problems in airlines with work-balancing goals” by Jesica de Armas Adrián, Luis Cadarso Morga, Ángel A. Juan Pérez and Francisco Javier Faulín Fajardo.
The judges valued its contribution to air transport in relation to the development of resource allocation methodologies that make it possible to combine efficient crew planning with balanced resource management.
• “Methodology to optimise and analyse the media and infrastructure response in the airport system in winter operations using genetic algorithm-based models” by César Marín Fernández.
The judges valued its contribution to methodologies to optimise airport operations in adverse weather situations by using new mathematical techniques to solve engineering

José Ramón López Villares Award
This award recognises final theses in the Aeronautical and Aerospace Engineering undergraduate or master’s degree. The winning works were:
• Air Navigation Specialty: End of master's project: “Trajectory-based operational concepts comparison through ATM performance indicators analysis” by Guillermo Orenga Imaz, Carlos III University of Madrid.
The panel of judges valued its accurate analysis from a practical perspective of the impact of the implementation of trajectory-based operational concepts in terms of operational safety and capacity, as well as possible environmental benefits arising from a potential reduction in fuel consumption and emissions obtained by flying optimal routes.
• Airports Specialty: End of master's project: “Simulation of the climate control facility at Alicante-Elche Airport with TRNSYS” by Alberto García González, Miguel Hernández University of Elche, Polytechnic School of Elche.
The judges valued the project for reasons including its good theoretical basis and practical application to a real case. They were also impressed with the inclusion of the results into a practical example to analyse whether it would really deliver improved energy efficiency at Alicante-Elche Airport.
