ENAIRE invests €3 million in improving system that provides the information needed before flying
ICARO supplies aeronautical, weather and flight plan info
ENAIRE, the air navigation manager in Spain, will invest €3 million in the functional improvement of the ICARO system. ICARO integrates in a single medium the operational information that aeronautical users (pilots, airlines, etc.) need before starting a flight.
ICARO (Integrated Com/Ais/Aip & Reporting Office) is the ENAIRE system that automates aeronautical information management (NOTAM) performed at the Spanish NOF (NOTAM Office).

ICARO facilitates access to aeronautical users via apps installed at airports or from the enaire.es website. This means that, before flying, a user can obtain all the aeronautical and meteorological weather he or she needs in the form of a pre-flight information bulletin and can also file a flight plan from their mobile device.
This collaborative system by ENAIRE furthermore supplies aeronautical and meteorological information on the Spanish airspace to SACTA (Automated Traffic Control System), used by ATCOs at all control towers and centres across the country.
ICARO also provides flight plan information to control towers with a Eurocontrol Advanced ATC TWR certificate (such as Malaga-Costa del Sol and Gran Canaria) and to airports in the A-CDM (Airport Collaborative Decision Making) programme which, thanks to ICARO, share information with ENAIRE and Eurocontrol that results in enhanced flight management.
2020 Flight Plan
The evolution of the ICARO system is aligned with ENAIRE’s objective of boosting service capacity and driving better quality to satisfy flight demands and customer needs.
This work is part of the Technology Modernisation Plan included in the ENAIRE Strategic Plan, or 2020 Flight Plan. It provides for the investment of around €300 million in the 2017-2020 period.
ENAIRE is putting this money into overhauling the air navigation system and taking it forward with the incorporation of new technologies in line with Single European Sky and SESAR 2020 requirements.
