ENAIRE uses Fitur to showcase the navigation services that bring eight out of every 10 tourists to Spain by air
UK and Germany had strongest flight growth to Spain in 2016
ENAIRE, the air navigation manager in Spain, will engage in the International Tourism Fair (Fitur) in Madrid from 18 to 22 January with an almost 200 sq metre space in pavilion 10 shared with other Ministry of Public Works companies. The stand showcases the navigation services that make it possible to manage the traffic and entry of airborne tourists into Spain. Eight out of every 10 tourists fly into the country.

A total of 1,867,734 IFR flights (commercial, airfreight, etc.) were managed in 2016, a figure which climbs to two million when VFR flights (light/ultralight aircraft, etc.) are added. Traffic hit an all-time high in July.
Principal traffic by country
ENAIRE will use the tourism fair to take stock of the main origins and destinations of flights controlled in Spain. Among international traffic, UK and Germany were the countries where flights to Spain grew most in 2016.
The busiest international flights with the UK in 2016 were those to the east of the peninsula (80,745 flights, up 18.4%), the Canary Islands (56,687 flights, up 20%) and the Balearic Islands (53,606 flights, up 14.7%).
Also of note were routes between Germany and the Balearics (63,725 flights, +18.3%), Germany and the east of the peninsula (39,094 flights, +7.4%) and Germany and the Canaries (36,776 flights, +11.3%).
Domestic and overflight traffic
Within domestic air traffic, of note was the volume of flights between Canary Island airports (66,598 flights, +7.2%) and between the central/north of the peninsula and the east (50,464 flights, +1.8%).
The strongest growth among overflights (flights controlled in the Spanish airspace that neither start nor end in Spain) were Portugal-UK (50,710 flights, up 10%) and Portugal-France (47,861 flights, up 12.2%).
The ENAIRE stand
Visitors will be able to take part in a game that involves flying the air routes of an aeronautical chart under the hashtag #DestinoENAIRE at Twitter account @ENAIRE. The aim of the game is to find aeronautical elements like navaids that allow aircraft to follow their route on the cartographic map of Spain. Participants who find their location within the set time tweet it to @ENAIRE and win a prize if they’re right.
ENAIRE Foundation works
The ENAIRE stand will include various works from the ENAIRE Contemporary Art Collection managed by the ENAIRE Foundation: three sculptures by Manolo Valdés (Las Tres Damas de Barajas), a mural by Luis Feito, the photo “El brazo de Ana” by Alberto García-Alix and two works by José Manuel Broto and Eduardo Úrculo.
There will also be a panel explaining the Foundation’s activities, which this year will for the first time include partnerships with the Cervantes Institute, PhotoEspaña and ARCO for the outreach of the photography collection comprising over 100 original works by artists including Helena Almeida, Chema Madoz, Santiago Sierra and Daniel Canogar.
