ENAIRE regains the highest ILS category at Vigo Airport to ensure better approaches
ILS category III allows instrumental landings in severe low visibility conditions reducing the probability of go-aroundsENAIRE, the Public Works company that controls air navigation in Spain, regains the highest category which once again enables instrument approach procedures when landing at Vigo Airport.
Following ENAIRE's approval of the five-year obligatory revision of standards in compliance with the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), the Airport has regained the highest category, category III, of its ILS (a system used by aircraft in the event of very low visibility due to fog or very low cloud cover).
The aforementioned category III allows precision instrument landings by reducing the probability of go-arounds under severe low visibility conditions.
ENAIRE has updated the airspace and obstacle clearance procedures for the Vigo Airport approach area in collaboration with Aena, submitting the aforementioned reports to the State Aviation Safety Agency (Aesa).
ILS CATEGORY III
The ILS (Instrument Landing System) is an air navigation guidance system that provides the aircraft's pilot with accurate information to guide approach and landing. There are three categories in this system (I, II and III), with III being the one that ensures landings under the worst weather conditions.
