ENAIRE presents at Fitur its commitment to the sustainable mobility of air traffic, in line with the future act to be presented by the Ministry of Public Works

ENAIRE, the company of the Public Works Department that manages air traffic in Spain, will present its commitment to sustainable mobility and a cleaner atmosphere at the International Tourism Fair (Fitur), as well as its contribution to our country's leadership in tourism, which is all in line with the Ministry of Public Work's future Sustainable Mobility Act.

This commitment towards the environment and society made by ENAIRE becomes even more relevant within the framework of the managed flights, with 63 months of uninterrupted growth.

In 2019 green approaches, further direct routes and the use of renewable energies will save 5.5 million miles and 60,000 tons of fuel

Green approaches, further direct routes and less emissions

ENAIRE's sustainable mobility and commitment towards society is materialised by implementing green approaches -using less fuel by optimising its way of gliding-; reducing C02 emissions by designing further direct routes; achieving quieter operations; streamlining start-up times; and using exclusively electricity from renewable sources.

ENAIRE's Flight Plan, the Strategic Plan encompassing the period 2017-2020, specifies the scope of the aforementioned environmental commitment: 5.5 million miles (the equivalent of 1,600 round the world trips), 60,000 tons of fuel, 26 million euros will be saved by airlines, as well as a reduction of 191,000 tons of CO2 emissions into the atmosphere, which would be absorbed by 9 million trees.

ENAIRE will have reduced 15% of its energy consumption and 1% of the generated waste between 2017 and 2020.

An ecological and interactive stand

ENAIRE will attend this tourism meeting, held in Madrid from the 23rd to the 27th of January, together with other companies of the Ministry of Public Works (Aena, Adif, Renfe and Puertos del Estado), sharing the stand in pavilion 10.

The stand is a manifestation of ecology, involves interaction and invites visitors to participate by reproducing graphics, messages and cardboard recycled elements. A series of benches will be featured around an airport's control tower and some pedals will be made available to generate the energy that lights up the tower.

Visitors can enjoy the opportunity of taking a photo with old-fashion aviator googles and props and using our photocall that simulates a cardboard plane, as well as uploading it to Twitter citing @ENAIRE, with the possibility of winning a prize.

Two new ENAIRE Foundation venues

The ENAIRE Foundation will present the two future venues in Santander and Madrid at ENAIRE's stand.

The visitor can learn about the location of the new venue in Naves de Gamazo in Santander by means of three 140x186 cm photographs taken by Filippo Poli. The Arquería de Nuevos Ministerios in Madrid will be presented by means of a 50x200 cm diptych made by Gsus Fernández, who is also the author of a video about the ENAIRE Foundation's art centres that will be projected at the stand.

Actions in the Summer Plan

ENAIRE's actions include improving the efficiency of flight management and its commitment to sustainable mobility for the summer, which will significantly increase air traffic. Last summer, ENAIRE broke the daily traffic record 16 times.

This summer, ENAIRE will implement plans and carry out actions related to managing air traffic flow, bad weather conditions, improving predictions, digitisation and new security networks, and additional procedures for contingencies in order to increase the airspace's capacity and efficiency in a series of months in which the number of flights significantly rise.

We must emphasise ENAIRE's commitment to technological modernisation. ENAIRE will invest 360 million euros (101 million in 2019) between 2017 and 2020 to maintain, improve and develop the Spanish air navigation system, which is in a leading position internationally, by incorporating new technologies that are in line with the Single European Sky requirements.

In addition, ENAIRE is reinforcing the number of air traffic controllers with an additional 420 positions by 2025, a 21% increase on the 2017 figure.

The improvement of efficiency and productivity have enabled ENAIRE to reduce en route charges by 12% for the year 2019.

Two million flights and 300 million passengers

In 2018 flights managed by ENAIRE grew by 5.3%, above the European average of 3.5%, exceeding in a year the mark of 2 million managed flights, transporting over 300 million passengers.

Air traffic increased in all ENAIRE control centres in 2018: Madrid, 1,146,611 flights (+5.2%); Barcelona, 953,070 (+4.2%); Seville, 403,086 (+5.9%); Canary Islands, 354,126 (+6.7%); and Palma, 323,167 (+3.9%).
