ENAIRE assumes the presidency of the Steering Committee of iTEC, an alliance that is modernising Europe's air traffic management system
In March, ENAIRE will take over the presidency of the iTEC (interoperability Through European Collaboration) steering committee, an alliance that develops the interoperability of air traffic systems. The goal of this collaboration between several European air navigation service providers, with the company Indra as a technological partner, is to implement a single air traffic management system that is consistent with the SESAR (Single European Sky ATM Research) programme. The members of the iTEC alliance will share the development costs involved in advancing the efficient integration of the Single European Sky, moving towards a digital sky.
The Director of Air Navigation Services, Enrique Maurer, will chair the Board of the iTEC alliance for the next 12 months. The chair of the iTEC Steering Committee is assigned on a rotating basis. ENAIRE is once more taking the lead of this group, two years after having presided over it, in 2018. This Committee provides guidelines for its members, tracks progress and manages the votes needed to make any relevant decisions.
ENAIRE founded iTEC in 2007, along with the air navigation service providers of the United Kingdom (NATS) and Germany (DFS), and Indra as a technology partner. They were joined years later by the navigation providers of Poland (PANSA), Lithuania (ORO NAVIGACIJA), the Netherlands (LVNL) and Norway (AVINOR).
iTEC Version 3 - the future
During its presidency, ENAIRE will push for progress in defining the prototype of the future version (V3) of iTEC. Version V3 of iTEC will result in improved collaboration to develop a common product that meets the needs of all air navigation providers. This will mean tangible benefits for everyone, including air traffic controllers and pilots.
iTEC V3 will incorporate the industry's best practices while sharing a common development line and increasing the efficiency of air traffic management. The system will be oriented towards interoperability between national air traffic management systems by relying on common interfaces designed under the European SESAR programme.
The traffic managed with iTEC is based on 4D trajectories, improving flight forecasts to reduce flight times, shorten routes, and lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. These advances are made possible by shared management tools and a common airspace architecture designed by the European Commission.
As a result, air navigation service providers will have lower investment costs thanks to implementing a shared system. The advantages of iTEC include increased airspace capacity while reducing routine tasks through automation. It will also enhance the safety and productivity of air traffic controllers by reducing their workload through the incorporation of technological tools and new functionalities.
About ENAIRE
ENAIRE is the air navigation service provider in Spain.
As a company of the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and the Urban Agenda, it provides en route control services for all flights and overflights from five control centres in Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Gran Canaria and Palma, as well as approach services to every airport in the country.
In addition, 45 control towers receive ENAIRE's communication, navigation and surveillance services, and 21 airports, including the country's busiest, rely on its aerodrome control services.
ENAIRE is the fourth most important European air navigation service provider, and, in a clear commitment to the Single Sky initiative, belongs to international partnerships such as SESAR Joint Undertaking, SESAR Deployment Manager, A6 Alliance, iTEC, CANSO and ICAO.
