ENAIRE improves its sustainability performance in 2025, saving 13,300 tonnes of CO2 and 4,200 tonnes of fuel

In a year marked by a new all-time traffic record — 2,470,604 flights handled, 4.7% more than in 2024 — ENAIRE, Spain’s state-owned air navigation service provider, achieved a notable improvement in its sustainability results in 2025, confirming its commitment to the sustainable development of the aviation sector.

In 2025, ENAIRE avoided the emission of 13,300 tonnes of CO2, equivalent to the annual emissions of 2,700 cars, and saved 4,200 tonnes of fuel compared with the previous year. As a result of these savings, 711,000 kilometres were not flown in 2025 compared with 2024, the equivalent of 18 trips around the Earth.

Greater in-flight efficiency, achieved by designing increasingly direct and efficient routes, and greater airspace flexibility, achieved through civil-military coordination, were key factors in delivering these environmental results. Specifically, the flight efficiency figure for the Spanish route network stood at 96.8% in 2025, the best result of the last 10 years, with the exception of the pandemic year 2020, while traffic reached an all-time high.

Particularly noteworthy is the improvement in so-called vertical efficiency, achieved through continuous climb and descent operations rather than stabilised or stepped manoeuvres. In 2025, ENAIRE authorised an average of 39% continuous descent operations and 76% continuous climb operations at major airports.

This places ENAIRE as a leading air navigation service provider in Europe in terms of more environmentally sustainable operations. Its strong commitment to environmental protection, set out in its strategic plan, the 2030 Flight Plan, guides ENAIRE towards continuous improvements in flight efficiency, reduced consumption, the transition to clean energy and the minimisation of waste generation.

ENAIRE is committed to the environment. ENAIRE radar in Tenerife.

Commitment to the use of clean energy

Strategic investments in clean energy and self-generation systems have enabled construction to begin in 2025 on the photovoltaic plant at the Barcelona Control Centre. The control centres in Madrid, the Canary Islands and Seville already have photovoltaic installations and a wind turbine, capable of supplying more than 20% of the total energy consumption of these facilities, thereby reinforcing the organisation’s commitment to sustainability and operational efficiency.

In addition, throughout 2025, self-generation projects were put out to tender at the radar facilities in El Judío, Villanubla, Alcolea and Valdespina. At present, 7% of the energy consumed by ENAIRE comes from its own self-generation systems, while 100% of the energy purchased from the electricity grid carries guarantees of renewable origin, consolidating a responsible energy model that is in keeping with decarbonisation targets.

Self-consumption at ENAIRE covers more than 20% of consumption in several control centers.

Reduced carbon footprint

In 2025, ENAIRE obtained verification of the calculation of scopes 1, 2 and 3* of its carbon footprint for the 2023 and 2024 reporting years. The carbon footprint for scopes 1 and 2 was reduced by more than 75% in 2024 compared with 2019, reflecting the organisation’s commitment to decarbonisation.

*Scope 1: direct emissions from own sources. Scope 2: indirect emissions from purchased electricity. Scope 3: other indirect emissions.
