The judges of the 22nd ENAIRE Foundation Awards have announced the winners of the three prizes that had still to be determined: The José Ramón López Villares Award for end-of-degree or master’s course projects on air navigation or airports; the Luis Azcárraga Award for singular studies on air transport and the Emilio Herrera Awards for merits accumulated over a working life by a Spaniard whose professional career has been dedicated to an area of aeronautics (research, teaching, engineering, public or private business management) and who has earned fame either in Spain or abroad.
José Ramón López Villares Award
This annual prize recognises end of degree or master’s projects in Aeronautical and Aerospace Engineering or Civil, Industrial or Telecommunications Engineering regarding air navigation or airports in any university, written in any of the official languages of Spain or in English. There are up to four prizes, each worth €3,000.
This year, the judges, comprising the Secretary of State for Infrastructures, Transport and Housing, chairman of ENAIRE and chairman of the board of trustees of the ENAIRE Foundation, Julio Gómez-Pomar; the director of the Aena Airports Network, Fernando Echégaray, who delegated his vote to the head of the Aena Airports Network Planning and Control Department, Alejandro Cid; and the director of the ENAIRE Air Navigation Systems director, Enrique Maurer, gave the prizes to two works:
-
Airports Specialty: End of master’s project: “Simulation of the climate control facility at Alicante-Elche Airport with TRNSYS” by Alberto García González, Miguel Hernández University of Elche, Polytechnic School of Elche. The judges valued the project for reasons including its good theoretical basis and practical application to a real case. They were also impressed with the inclusion of the results into a practical example to analyse whether it would really deliver improved energy efficiency at Alicante-Elche Airport.
-
Air Navigation Specialty: End of master’s project: “Trajectory-based operational concepts comparison through ATM performance indicators analysis” by Guillermo Orenga Imaz, Carlos III University of Madrid. The project analyses the impact of the implementation of trajectory-based operational concepts from a practical perspective in terms of operational safety and capacity, as well as possible environmental benefits arising from a potential reduction in fuel consumption and emissions obtained by flying optimal routes.
This prize recognises works, studies or projects that make a singular contribution to air transport in terms of planning/organisation, financial/administrative management, environmental impact/conservation or technological research and innovation. This prize is awarded every year and is worth €12,000.
The panel of judges comprising the Secretary of State for Infrastructures, Transport and Housing, chairman of ENAIRE and chairman of the board of trustees of the ENAIRE Foundation, Julio Gómez-Pomar; the director-general of Civil Aviation at the Ministry of Public Works, Raúl Medina; and the director of the ETSIA School of Aeronautical Engineers at the Polytechnic University of Madrid, Javier Crespo (who delegated his vote to Emilio Navarro, ETSIA deputy director of studies), decided to share the prize between:
-
“Multi-start randomized heuristics for real-life crew rostering problems in airlines with work-balancing goals” by Jesica de Armas Adrián, Luis Cadarso Morga, Angel A. Juan Pérez and Francisco Javier Faulín Fajardo.
The judges valued its contribution to air transport in relation to the development of resource allocation methodologies that make it possible to combine efficient crew planning with balanced resource management.
-
“Methodology to optimise and analyse the media and infrastructure response in the airport system in winter operations using genetic algorithm-based models” by César Marín Fernández.
The judges valued its contribution to methodologies to optimise airport operations in adverse weather situations by using new mathematical techniques to solve engineering problems.
Emilio Herrera Award
This prize is established to recognise the merits accumulated over a working life by a Spaniard whose professional career has been dedicated to an area of aeronautics (research, teaching, engineering, public or private business management) and who has earned fame either in Spain or abroad.
This prize was not awarded this year.
