The Ministry of Public Works opens the bidding process for the refurbishment of the Naves de Gamazo warehouses in Santander
The project involves a total investment of 2 million euros
The Ministry of Public Works, through the ENAIRE Foundation, has opened the bidding process for the project draft, works supervision and refurbishment of the old Naves de Gamazo warehouses in the Port of Santander. The purpose of this bidding process is to adapt these warehouses to host museum collections, with a budget of 209,845 euros according to the Spanish Official Bulletin (BOE). The basic project draft stage will run for 4 weeks, while the executive project draft will last 10.
The aim of this project is to breathe new life into the Naves de Gamazo warehouses by turning them into an Art Centre -though maintaining its industrial character and open space- and making them the future, permanent home of the ENAIRE Collection of Contemporary Art.
The ENAIRE Foundation will renovate this unique building, whose two warehouses cover approximately 1,000 m², but preserve the values of the historic construction in its adaption to hold a versatile, modern and sustainable cultural and exhibition space.
The two warehouses will be affected by the planned works. The oldest warehouse, erected in 1908, is the largest and most valuable, while the other one, built in 1950, has a smaller surface area.
The basis of the project is the unification of both spaces, recovering the original appearance and structure of the first of the warehouses, in parallel with the renovation and modernisation of the more recent warehouse. The total investment amounts to 2 million euros.
Future headquarters of the ENAIRE Collection
The permanent collection exhibited at the Naves de Gamazo warehouses will consist of works of art from the ENAIRE Collection of Contemporary Art, which comprises almost 1200 works created by the most renowned Spanish artists between the second half of the 20th century and the present day. It includes works by artists such as Barceló, Tàpies, Chillida, Broto, Genovés, Arroyo and Úrculo, as well as photographers such as García-Alix, Daniel Canogar and Chema Madoz.
The collection presents a variety of techniques, such as painting, sculpture, graphic work, drawing, photography and video, and it encompasses the most representative artistic trends in the past six decades, including figurative art, abstraction, expressionism and constructivism, among others.
The agreement for the transfer of use of the Naves de Gamazo warehouses as the future home of the ENAIRE Collection was entered on 28 October between the ENAIRE Foundation and the Santander Port Authority for a period of up to 20 years, which will be renewable for successive five-year periods up to a maximum of 50 years.
By means of this agreement, we intend to bring this collection, owned by the Ministry of Public Works, closer to the public.
