Alberto García-Alix, ENAIRE Foundation 2022 Lifetime Achievement Award
Alberto García-Alix (León, 1956), photographer, audiovisual creator, writer and editor wins the ENAIRE Foundation 2022 Photography Achievement Award. This recognition is on top of the National Photography Award (1999), the PHotoESPAÑA Prize (2012), the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts (2019), and other awards he has received throughout his career.
This honorary distinction, presented by the ENAIRE Foundation and worth 17,000 euros, recognises the creative maturity and the four decades that the artist has spent behind the camera. Over the years, García-Alix's look and photography have evolved and gained in complexity, depth, and introspection. His austere work, in which black and white photography predominates, has transcended borders and established him as one of the best portrait artists, photographers and artists on the Spanish and international art scene.
Again this year, the ENAIRE Foundation is committed to photography and acknowledges the artist's career and work
García-Alix was self-taught, and began taking photographs at the age of 20. Shortly thereafter, in the early 1980s, he presented his first exhibit at the Moriarty and Buades galleries (Madrid), and the Portafollio Gallery (London). Throughout his career, his photographic work has been displayed in prestigious venues in Spain and abroad, such as the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, the Maison Européene de la Photographie (Paris), the Prado National Museum, and the Moscow House of Photography.
The presentation of the ENAIRE Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award involves the hosting of an exhibit that will open the PhotoESPAÑA international photography festival, which is celebrating its 25th edition this year, at the Royal Botanical Garden in Madrid on 1 June. On this occasion, García-Alix will present the project he has been working on for the last four years: Fantasies in the Prado.
This work, which has never been published, shows us the imaginary world that the photographer has managed to create from the works on display at the Prado Museum, using the laborious technique of multiple exposures on analogue film and offering a reinterpretation of some of the masterpieces in the Prado. The ENAIRE Foundation will have its own stand (9A28) at the ARCO fair, where it will premiere two of the images that make up the Fantasies in the Prado project.
