The ENAIRE Foundation presents the ‘Imperdibles: Emilio Herrera’ app on the 147th anniversary of the great pioneer of aeronautics
The ENAIRE Foundation presents today, Friday, on the occasion of the 147th anniversary of the birth of Emilio Herrera, the first version of ‘Imperdibles: Emilio Herrera’, an application accessible via QR code, with no installation required, designed to expand and enrich the public’s experience around the figure of the great pioneer of aeronautics in Spain and creator of the pressurised suit that paved the way for modern space suits:

This app has been created as a new digital cultural mediation resource by the ENAIRE Foundation, aimed at enabling visitors to the Foundation’s Art Centre in Santander and remote audiences to discover essential content in a quick, engaging and accessible way from their mobile phones.
This first version of the app, dedicated to the figure of Emilio Herrera, integrates a podcast with audio recordings by the family of the illustrious engineer, augmented reality (AR), videos and various applied artificial intelligence resources, accessible from anywhere in the world and integrated into the exhibition ‘Lovers of aviation’ at the Naves de Gamazo Art Centre, all in an expanded, narrative and interactive experience.
“At the ENAIRE Foundation, we have been working on content about Emilio Herrera to begin commemorating ‘Emilio Herrera Day’, on 13 February, marking 147 years since his birth. Over the coming years, up to the 150th anniversary, we face the challenge of fully recovering his legacy and securing the worldwide recognition he deserves”, said Margarita Asuar, Managing Director of the ENAIRE Foundation.
Asuar promoted and coordinated the working group for the national and international recognition of Emilio Herrera Linares, bringing together the leading institutions in the aeronautical and space sector. These include the Spanish Space Agency, the Air and Space Force and the Spanish Delegation to ICAO — headed by Ángel Luis Arias — as well as historians such as Emilio Atienza and Carlos Lázaro, the Emilio Herrera Linares Scientific Association, the Official Association of Aeronautical Engineers of Spain (COIAE), the Historical and Cultural Service of the Air Force (SHYCEA) and the Advanced Technical School of Aeronautical and Space Engineering (ETSIAE-UPM), among others. The working group is open to new members.
An app to “discover what matters”
The ‘Imperdibles: Emilio Herrera’ app organises its content into various formats for different types of audiences, from those seeking a quick contextual explanation to those wishing to explore in greater depth through audio and audiovisual pieces.
The ENAIRE Foundation has conceived this app as an evolving format that will continue to grow in content, culminating in October with the presentation of the exhibition project approved by ICAO for the ENAIRE Foundation, which will showcase the full historical and current strength of the aeronautical and space sector.
This initiative forms part of the ENAIRE Foundation’s commitment to museum innovation and to broadening access to aeronautical culture, combining high-quality digital formats with immersive experiences and tools for content production and distribution.
Available from today
The app will be available from today, Friday 13 February, via QR code for use on mobile devices without installation.
There will be continuous reading activities for the ‘Book of Short Stories’, the competition dedicated by the ENAIRE Foundation to Emilio Herrera.

The Flying Lovers exhibition, which can be visited at the Naves de Gamazo Art Centre, is included in the commemoration of the Centenary of the Great Flights of Spanish Aviation of the Air and Space Force. “In this way, we are beginning to raise awareness of the importance of Emilio Herrera’s contribution to the great flights and to the wider aeronautical and space history of Spain”, Asuar explains.

About ENAIRE Foundation
Is a cultural institution of the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility that, in addition to managing, preserving and exhibiting the ENAIRE Collection of Contemporary Art, engages in a comprehensive annual programme of activities that focus on aeronautical art and culture. Notably, it is one of the institutions that currently provides the most support to photography through its annual prizes - which have become a benchmark for professional photographers - and by hosting exhibits.
It is the only foundation in Spain that combines the two seemingly disparate themes of art and aeronautical culture, bringing them together by undertaking a programme of activities that promote the study, research, knowledge and dissemination of aeronautical culture, integrating history and modernity to raise awareness of the world of aviation in our country.
The Naves de Gamazo are the first permanent home of the ENAIRE Collection of Contemporary Art, an example of collaboration between government
agencies that was made possible thanks to the partnership and joint efforts of the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, the Government of Cantabria, through the Office for Culture, Tourism and Sport, and the Port Authority of Santander, which share the operating expenses of the centre in order to ensure the present and future viability of this cultural project.
ENAIRE Foundation is implementing digital museum resources to boost the democratisation of art and make it accessible from anywhere in the world. These new museum resources are now available on the Foundation's website:
