ENAIRE tops 100 satellite landings in Palma de Mallorca

New satellite-based approaches improve airline and airport operationsENAIRE, the Public Works Group company that manages air navigation in Spain, has recorded 117 landings with satellite navigation at Palma de Mallorca Airport since its implementation last March.

These approach procedures have been designed by ENAIRE and are currently used by suitably fitted aircraft with a trained crew. In the last two months they have been used by 103 aircraft, exceeding initial expectations.

ENAIRE, as part of the 2020 Flight Plan, has increased operational efficiency by implementing new procedures based on satellite navigation, as well as improving accessibility to the different airport runway thresholds, thus improving safety even further.

Palma de Mallorca is the sixth Spanish airport, and the first in terms of high density traffic, where it is possible to land with this type of procedure from the already existing entry points.

This is all possible without having to set up additional land infrastructure, which represents financial savings and operational benefits as a result.

The project implemented at Palma Airport involves two types of manoeuvres.

On the one hand, runway 06L has satellite approach manoeuvres based on the European EGNOS augmentation system. On the other hand, on approaching the 24R and 24L parallel runways, there are procedures based on satellite navigation with and without the necessary use of the EGNOS system.
