ENAIRE reaffirms its leadership in the sustainable development of the aviation sector
ENAIRE, Spain’s state-owned air navigation manager, has published its 2024 Sustainability Report, a document that highlights the most significant progress in environmental, social, technological, and governance matters. The report reflects the organisation’s strong commitment to a more efficient, safe, and sustainable aviation sector, in line with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
ENAIRE is committed to innovative solutions such as the use of artificial intelligence, process automation, and advanced navigation systems to transform airspace management
This commitment to sustainability is evident in the results achieved despite increased traffic. In 2024, the efficiency of managed flights reached 96.7%, which meant flying over 3.6 million fewer kilometres—the equivalent of 91 trips around the Earth—preventing 68,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions and saving more than 21,700 tonnes of fuel. In addition, 100% of the external energy used by ENAIRE came from renewable sources, and 2.6 GWh of energy was generated through self-production.
These figures also show that ENAIRE’s Green Sky Plan, one of the organisation’s strategic pillars, is delivering very positive results. Over the past three years, thanks to the optimisation of routes and operational procedures, airlines have flown more than 10 million fewer kilometres—the equivalent of 260 trips around the Earth—resulting in average annual savings of over 60,000 tonnes of CO2.

Digital transformation has been another strategic priority for ENAIRE, which invested nearly 160 million euros in technological modernisation, including more than 24 million in R&D. Highlights include progress in the rollout of U-space, a key element for the implementation of drones in Europe in the coming years, ENAIRE’s designation as Common Information Service Provider (CISP), and its participation in 31 SESAR 3 programme projects, leading key initiatives for the European digital sky.
All these achievements in sustainability and digital transformation were reached in another record year—2024—in operational terms. ENAIRE managed 2,358,988 flights, 7.6% more than in 2023 and 9.7% above pre-pandemic 2019 levels. Spain positioned itself as a European leader, with air traffic growth 13.4 percentage points higher than the continental average since 2019, all while keeping average flight delays well below the European mean and reducing airport-attributable delays by 12.6% compared with the previous year.
Looking ahead, ENAIRE is working on evolving its Flight Plan 2025 into Flight Plan 2030, which will set out the roadmap to continue leading the sector’s transformation, with sustainability always as a core value of the organisation.
