The Board of Trustees of ENAIRE Foundation has approved the Foundation’s participation in the exhibition Modern Barcelona, from Gaudí to Picasso, which will be held at the Kunsthalle München in Germany from 23 October 2026 to 21 February 2027.
ENAIRE Foundation has selected two of the oldest works in the ENAIRE Contemporary Art Collection to represent Catalan Modernisme in the German city. The exhibition will feature ‘Tormenta en la playa’ (Storm on the Beach) by Anglada Camarasa and ‘La cala encantada’ (The Enchanted Cove) by Joaquim Mir.
“At ENAIRE Foundation, we believe it is extremely important to take part in international exhibition projects of this kind at prestigious museums that showcase Spanish culture. “The project is particularly significant for the ENAIRE Collection, not only because of the exhibition itself, but also because of the accompanying catalogue and the development of its exhibition design and curatorial concept. “The works to be loaned by ENAIRE Foundation are truly spectacular. These two oils on canvas are the oldest paintings in the ENAIRE Collection,” explained Margarita Asuar, Managing Director of ENAIRE Foundation.
Two works of outstanding artistic value
Storm on the Beach by Hermenegildo Anglada Camarasa and The Enchanted Cove by Joaquim Mir form part of the publicly owned ENAIRE Art Collection, managed by ENAIRE Foundation. Together, they offer an exceptional opportunity to view two of the most innovative interpretations of landscape in early 20th-century Spanish art.
Each artist developed his own distinctive visual language, but both approached nature as a space for formal and chromatic experimentation. Moving beyond descriptive representation, they explored its more evocative and emotional dimensions.
In Storm on the Beach, Anglada Camarasa, a leading figure in Catalan Modernisme, demonstrates his remarkable ability to transform light, colour and paint itself into elements of intense narrative expression, with clear affinities with Impressionism. The gentle wash of the water onto the shore, the shifting atmosphere and the vibrant treatment of the surface reveal exceptional technical mastery and a modern conception of painting, in which landscape ceases to be merely a subject and becomes a vehicle for emotion. Particularly striking is the contrast between the substantial areas of impasto and other sections where the bare, unpainted canvas remains visible. The work ranks among the finest examples of the renewal of Spanish landscape painting led by the artist.
For its part, Joaquim Mir’s The Enchanted Cove, commissioned to decorate the Grand Hotel in Palma, depicts Cala de Sant Vicenç in Deià. The work epitomises Mir’s distinctive contribution to the development of modern painting. Here, the landscape becomes an almost visionary experience, as the dramatic use of light and exuberant colour create a highly poetic, dreamlike setting. Mir moved away from naturalism to develop a remarkably free visual language in which colour—particularly blue—acquires an expressive force of its own and becomes the principal vehicle for emotion. His ability to merge reality and imagination made him one of the most original figures in Catalan Modernisme and Spanish Post-Impressionism.
Together, the two paintings create a fascinating dialogue between different ways of interpreting landscape. While Anglada Camarasa emphasises the energy and tension of the natural elements, Joaquim Mir offers a more introspective vision in which colour becomes the true protagonist. This juxtaposition reveals the richness and diversity of two of the most innovative figures in early 20th-century Spanish art.

Modern Barcelona, from Gaudí to Picasso
The Kunsthalle München is one of Germany’s most prestigious venues for temporary exhibitions and is located in the heart of the city’s historic centre. Unlike a traditional museum, it has no permanent collection. Instead, it stages three major exhibitions each year, covering subjects ranging from classical and modern painting to photography, fashion and industrial design.
Through 160 paintings, drawings, sculptures, pieces of furniture and architectural models, Modern Barcelona, from Gaudí to Picasso will explore the richness and diversity of Catalan Modernisme between 1880 and 1914.
