- The investment is co-funded by the European Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan
- The new 3D primary radar—the only one in the Balearic Islands and the third in Spain—significantly enhances aircraft detection and tracking
- It pinpoints aircraft position in three dimensions with high precision: azimuth, range and altitude
- The 3D primary radar covers approximately 120 nautical miles and effectively mitigates signal interference through its cutting-edge technology
ENAIRE, Spain's national air navigation service provider, has brought into service the first 3D primary radar in the Balearic archipelago—a key new piece of aviation safety infrastructure. Located at the Randa station in Mallorca, the radar is the third of its kind installed in Spain and represents a major step forward in air traffic management, pinpointing aircraft position through three-dimensional scanning with high precision.
The new radar has a coverage of up to 120 nautical miles (approximately 220 km), extending the range of its predecessor, and strengthens air surveillance in an area of high flight density, improving safety both on the ground and in the air.
The 3D radar collects and processes data in real time to deliver a clear picture of the airspace even in complex environments, detecting aircraft in the presence of wind farms through its 3D technology.
One of the radar's major advantages is its ability to reduce interference. Its technology effectively mitigates unwanted signal echoes, enabling more accurate detection under complex conditions and improving the integrity of the detection process. The result is a higher probability of aircraft detection and faster response times in complex situations.
Co-funded by the European Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (RTRP), which supports modern, efficient and sustainable infrastructure, the new radar strengthens air traffic management across the Balearic region, marking a further step in ENAIRE's commitment to delivering a safe, innovative and high-quality service for the public.
About ENAIRE
ENAIRE is the air navigation service provider in Spain.
As a company of the Ministry of Sustainable Transport and Mobility, it provides air traffic control services during the en route and approach phases of all flights to and from Spain and overflights. In addition, it manages communications, navigation and surveillance services from ENAIRE in the airspace and the entire AENA airport network in Spain and provides aerodrome air traffic control services in 21 airports, including the busiest.
ENAIRE is the fourth largest European air navigation service provider, and it is a member of international partnerships A6 Alliance, SESAR (Single European Sky ATM Research) Joint Undertaking, SESAR Deployment Manager, iTEC, CANSO (Civil Air Navigation Services Organisation) and collaborates closely with ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization).
ENAIRE has obtained the highest rating in the key performance indicator for air safety at European scale for six consecutive years, the last five with the maximum possible score of 100%. It has also been awarded the EFQM 600 Seal for its safe, efficient, innovative and sustainable management of air navigation services.
